Palacio Belmonte
When searching for hotels in Lisbon, I came across one that really struck me: Palácio Belmonte. After some research, I knew this was a hotel I had to experience for myself. Located in the Alfama, the oldest district of Lisbon, and the neighbourhood is rich with ancient history. You should also know this isn't just any hotel, it's actually a palace and former residence of a noble family dating back to 1449.Ecologist Frederic Coustouls and his wife, artist Maria Mendonça, purchased the property about fifteen years ago. In six years they were able to restore the beautiful grounds into what it is today, revitalising many of the original interiors. With a very exclusive 11 suites, the palace is spread over 37,000 square meters and offers the utmost luxury and authenticity. It also features 7 terraces, a library, ancient works of art, grand halls, Michelin-starred chef, thousands of azulejos tiles, and a rooftop pool. The ancient dining room is even decorated with hand painted tiles dating back to the first quarter of the 18th century. One of my favourite memories from our stay was enjoying breakfast on the rooftop terrace every morning. You were greeted with soft morning light and breathtaking views over Lisbon's old town. Breakfast was made with fresh produce from the on-site organic garden with orange trees and mediterranean herbs. There is truly something special about this hotel that sets it apart from any other place. It's a unique and mesmerising vision, in heart of Lisbon, next door to the iconic São Jorge Castle. It's madly enriched with history and is a personal statement of what life in Lisbon should be like.
